Human Concerns Ministry
“Whatever you did for one of these least of my brothers and sisters, you did for me.” (Mt 25:40)
About Us
The mission of the Human Concerns Committee is to serve the parish as the primary resource and catalyst for the work of social justice in the area of human concerns. We will help promote and provide activities for the parish to get involved in that further support Jesus' call to serve our neighbors in need. Our current activities include:
- CARITAS: The Cathedral is an active member of Churches Around Richmond Involved to Assure Shelter. We host a group of homeless men or women overnight, one week a year, and provide a check-in point for eight weeks a year, while our guests await their transportation to another church. Volunteers are needed to provide food and hospitality.
- Micah Mentorship: The Cathedral provides volunteers to mentor students at Miles Jones Elementary school. The school needs regular volunteers to help as classroom and reading assistants.
- Door Ministry: Working with those individuals that come to the church's doors looking for assistance.
- House of Faith: We are a part of an interfaith build with Habitat for Humanity to build a home for a deserving family.
- Freedom House/Conrad Center: The Cathedral provides volunteers for both of these locations several times a year. Volunteers for Conrad Center arrive to serve prepared food at dinner time for the guests. Freedom house volunteers arrive in groups bringing a complete meal and dignify the guests with their warm cooking and hospitality.
- Crop Walk: This is an annual 3.5 mile walk, in solidarity with Stuart Circle Parish. It is in the Fall and winds through the Fan. The walk is an awareness program that begins with Cathedral families with children, and by the day of the walk, involves all parishioners with opportunities to support the event through baking for, or purchasing at our bake sales, cooking for, or dining at our poverty soup luncheon, and sponsoring our walkers, or walking on the day of the event.
- Human Concerns Committee Member: This committee welcomes new members who are passionate about social justice, and are interested in facilitating parishioner involvement and public relations for all of the above activities.
