The E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Series

In keeping with the tradition of cathedrals throughout the ages, the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart actively promotes and engages in the arts and social outreach for the Catholic Diocese of Richmond and the Greater Richmond Area. The Music for a Cathedral Space Concert Series is made possible through a generous grant from the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation; a generous music program endowment created by + Frank T. Eck; a generous music program endowment created by J. Alfred & Margaret Broaddus, Jr.; and the generosity of the community of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

The Holiday Festival of Music is a beloved Richmond tradition marking the beginning of the holiday season. This elegant concert draws nearly 1,000 guests of all ages. The funds raised by Holiday Festival of Music benefit the services and programs that Commonwealth Catholic Charities provides to the most vulnerable members of our communities.

This year, Forgotten Clefs: Renaissance Wind Ensemble has assembled texts from the Christmas portion of Messiah, Part 1, with music by Catholic composers of the sixteenth century. You’ll hear instruments from the Renaissance including cornetto, sackbut, recorders, and shawms.

See and hear J.S. Bach’s monumental Mass in B minor performed by Richmond’s own Cathedral Schola Cantorum with the Three Notch’d Road: The Virginia Baroque Ensemble performing on period instruments. 

VCU Health Orchestra

7:30 p.m.

Created in 2017, the Virginia Commonwealth University Health Orchestra is one of the few, academic medical symphony orchestras in the country and consists of health system team members. The orchestra aims to promote wellness; enhance relationships among team members, patients, families, visitors and the community; and to support fundraising for local health related charities.
