First Holy Communion

“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.”
—John 6:56

Every Catholic remembers receiving the Eucharist for the first time. This sacrament contains the Real Presence of Jesus Christ and strengthens our union with him.

First Holy Communion normally takes place when a child is seven years old and in second grade. It is preceded by the sacrament of Penance.

To receive First Penance and First Holy Communion, a child must already be baptized in the Catholic Church and enrolled in catechesis (home, parish, or Catholic school). Several preparation sessions are also required. Preparation for First Penance takes place in January and preparation for First Holy Communion takes place in April.
